CFM56 LEAP V P&W GTF
Ive been watching the press releases lately comming from Boeing, P&W and CFM regarding the 737 Max.
P&W claim the geared turbofan, being a revolutionary design will be 15% more efficient than existing technology. However, CFM who are offering their LEAP version of the current engine are claiming their improved efficiency will match the geared turbofan.
Now with only a pilots level of knowledge on engines, how can CFM claim this.
Any engineers out there who can explain it better.

CFM can claim anything they want, but they probably have some substantial evidence to back it up...
GE had great claims for GENx on the 787 and 747-8, and initially came up a bit short. So now they have an "upgrade" kit in the works to bring the specs closer to previous claims.
Fan blade design is significant in engine efficiency, so maybe CFM has some great ideas for a larger fan with better-designed blades. Boeing's recent announcement that the 737 Max will have the engine 'blended into the wing like the 777' gives some credence to the larger fan theory...
