Nowt on the job front and without experience and a type rating there is pretty much nil oportunities in the UK for any pilots.

Not quite true - the low cost operators are recruiting 737 type rated pilots in line with their ongoing fleet changes and expansion. Easyjet, Go, and Ryanair are currently recruiting. British European are recruiting for a sponsorship program right now. Their is also some limited contract work for the summer (charter operators).
I am one of the 1000 who is being made redundant, but I have been lucky enough to find contract work (thank god for that Boeing rating)!
Good luck to everyone who is being made redundant, lets hope the downturn is short lived and the upturn rapid and big.
