Question ATPL Medical - How Often?

G'Day there,

Not sure if this has been asked recently, but can anyone in Europe or North America tell me how often you have to renew your ATPL medical? Long story but in summary: here in Aust it has been every twelve months, but for those pilots aged 40+ and flying internationally it is now changing to every six months. Does that bring us into line with the rest of the world, or is it now an overkill?

Many thanks, P

Under CAA rules, it has always been 6 monthly, regardless of age.

The currently being issued CAA - JAA Class One is 12 months =<40, 6 months 40+.

Just got mine, and I read the blurb on the back page last night.....

Thanks fellas. From these posts, do I understand correctly that in the past it has been 6 monthly, but is being relaxed to 12 monthly for under-40's? Interesting that Aus has always been 12 monthly (well, during my time, anyway...)

Can any North American folks advise on the situation there?

Many thanks again.

Pharaoh Just to get the picture straight: under 40 my CAA ATPL medical was every 12 months and over 40 it has been six monthly. This has been the state of affairs for the last ten years and is still true on my JAA certificate from last summer.

In the US it has to be renewed every 6 months regardless of your age.

In oz 20 years back it was 6 months for senior commercial (500hrs, exams and test; PIC a/c over 12,500lbs). In those days ATPL was only for employees of an airline while they were employed by that airline and was a test for CPL, SCPL as appropriate.
