I’ve got a pair of Lightspeed 15XLs which I picked up in the US for just over $300. Very, very comfortable, and easy on the ears even without the ANR, but when you switch it on its like putting on an extra headset. The ANR is optimised for lower frequencies, meaning engine noise is dramatically reduced, though there is still quite a bit of higher frequency noise. Try www.anrheadsets.com for everything you’d ever want to know about them.

I love them and think ANR is certainly worth having, but would recommend you try and borrow a pair from someone to try out before you commit.
