pprune diaster fund?
I may have missed this idea/suggestion on the boards so please excuse me if this is the case.
Has anyone considered setting up a fund where we could make a donation to be forwarded to our fellow aviators - flight crew and cabin staff alike?
Or does anyone know of where or how this can be done?

Along the same lines...I'm a marketing consultant with an aviation industry client who wishes to donate (a quite substantial sum)to benefit the families of crew and passengers on the four planes. Can anyone provide details and/or websites of appropriate charities?

I'd add to that list a page to donate to the American Red Cross directly. The Amazon and Paypal sites will contribute all donations to the fund, but you have to be a signed-up member which some may not want to do.
http://www.redcross.org/donate/donate.html
Other than that, I think another fund solely related to the air industry is an excellent idea.
Watch out for scams that are on the increase. I have neighbor who works at the American Red Cross headquarters in D.C. and know the above link is legitimate, as are the payment methods through PayPal and Amazon.

Thanks for the input so far foloks.
I understand that American Airlines has a programme called the Customer Assitance Relief Effort (CARE), formed in the early 90s as a group to carry out survivor/family assistance. AA is a wee bit busy at the moment and hasn't got back to me.
Does anyone know more - do they still operate, and more relevant, have they established a fund?
This is getting closer to an aviation focused fund - there MUST be an existing one.
Or, if not, some folks ready to put their hands up and help get one established (quick) - bona fide volunteers heartily welcomed!
Any Aviation PR consultants out there may well have some great ideas.

Try this one. It has been setup by the United Airlines ALPA MEC (Master Executive Council) to benefit the families of the United flight crews specifically.
UNITED AIRLINES MEC 911 FUND
On September 11, 2001, the families of four JFK-based United Airlines pilots were confronted with the devastating news that their loved ones were crew members on United Flights 93 and 175 that were involved in the deadly terrorist attacks against the United States. The loss of four separate commercial aircraft in a single day without survivors is a tragedy beyond anything the aviation world has ever experienced or contemplated. As professional airline pilots, we all know that our families hope and pray they will get through their life times without having to confront the horrible news that met these four families on this terrible day.
All of us share in the profound grief and mourning of these brave airmen of United Airlines:
Captain Victor J. Saracini, Flight 175 (B-767)
First Officer Michael R. Horrocks, Flight 175
Captain Jason M. Dahl, Flight 93 (B-757)
First Officer Leroy W. Homer, Flight 93
Many of us who personally knew these fine men, also know that they are survived by spouses and children who are now coping with their staggering loss. As a gesture of sympathy and support to the surviving pilot families of the tragedy of September 11th, the United Airlines Pilots Master Executive Council has established the "United Pilots 911 Fund" for the purpose of providing a one-time financial gift to the immediate families of these pilots.
The funds solicited for the United Pilots 911 Fund are purely voluntary and will be distributed exclusively and entirely among the surviving immediate families of these four pilots. In the interest of providing expedient assistance to the families, donations to the United Pilots 911 Fund must be received no later than October 11, 2001, after which the Fund will be disbursed equally among the four immediate families of these fallen pilots. All donations received after October 11 will be returned to the donor. Finally, the United Pilots 911 Fund is not a qualified charitable trust, and therefore contributions are not tax deductible.
Please make checks payable to "United Pilots 911 Fund" and send your donations to the following address to be received no later than October 11:
United Pilots 911 Fund
75 Remittance Drive, Suite 3140
Chicago, IL 60675-3140
The United Pilots 911 Fund will also accept donations via wire transfer. Send to: Northern Trust Bank, Chicago, IL. ABA# 071000152, account name "United Pilots 911 Fund", account # 1952838.
Thank you for your generous support of these pilot families in the wake of this unprecedented tragedy.
Fraternally,
Captain F.C. Dubinsky
Chairman, UAL-MEC

It goes without saying that I would be more than happy to use the PPRuNe Fund account for the purposes of the various disaster funds for our American colleagues who have so sadly lost their lives.
However, Squawk8888 has listed some that you can pay directly into and perhaps even your own bank, like mine, is running a fund.
But..............if there is a real wish by PPRuNe members to make dontaions FROM PPRuNe itself I will be happy to take it on. But it would have to be done by cheques unless we can setup a PayPal system quickly, in which case I would discuss it with Danny.
I await your wishes.

If you want to give money to those who have suffered in this terrible tradgedy, why not give it directly to one of the major international relief organisations?
That way you can be sure it gets to those who need it most and who need it now.
The International Red Cross (for example), has the experience and means to ensure that the those who need it will get the financial and moral support they need during this time.
With the greatest respect to Danny and the rest, having a separate fund only complicates the issue.
It is also the duty of the US government and employers to ensure (as I'm sure they are), that every facility is made available to the victims and families until such time as they are able to cope again, (if ever).
Whatever assistance we can give will be welcomed by the US, but let's make it the best we can.
