When I first became a (31-year-old) student pilot, people looked at me edgily and said, "aren't you a bit old to be learning to fly?"

In the two and a half years since I learned to fly I've had my age estimated at twenty-four, been told I seemed too young to be married, and had people astonished I could be old enough to be a commercial pilot.

On the other hand, I found my first grey hair the week after I started flying.
