Question FIS-B vs. Onboard Weather Radar (Research Topic)

Hi everyone –

I am in the deadline of a Graduated Capstone Project and to complete it I have created a short questionnaire kindly seeking your opinions, comments, and answers based on your work experiences as pilot and crew cockpit. This project intends to analyze the pilot’s decision making at the time of receiving, reading, and using the weather broadcast information delivered from two different weather sources (the FIS-B and the weather radar system).

Introduction .

Flight Information Service-Broadcast, or FIS-B, is a strategic planning and real-time tactical tool, component of the new ADS-B avionics system, that permits pilots to gather, control, alert, and display weather broadcasts information textually and graphically in the cockpit.

According to FAA and the National Weather Services (NWS), the primary goal of the aviation weather system is the accident prevention ... However, an aviation accident statistics report realized during the last 10 years deducted that, the 70 % of air travel delays and the 23% of passenger airlines and cargo carriers accidents happened inside of United States were attributed to weather-related. In response to this and for unifying the weather broadcast system in a sole source of information, the FAA decided to launch the FIS-B program implementation.

But, the Special Committee 195 of the Requirements and Technical Concepts for Aviation (RTCA) organization manifested that: the initial implementation of FIS-B is not intended to replace existing voice radio FIS services, but to supplement or complement established sources of weather and operational information.

Questions.

1. I have airplane pilot-in-command experience in:
A. Commercial Airline
B. General Aviation
C. Aircraft Transportation
D. Military Aircraft
E. Helicopter
F. Other

2. I have flown for about (in years):
A. 0 to 5
B. 5 to 10
C. 10 to 15
D. More than 15

3. I have listened or taken the FAA Industry Training Standards (FITS) pilot training:
Yes No Yes, but have not taken yet

4. I have used the ADS-B automatic system:
Yes No No, but have knowledge

5. I have used the FIS-B weather automatic system:
Yes No No, but have knowledge

6. I have used both (FIS-B and on board radar) weather displays at the same time:
Yes No

7. If so, I have prioritized the:
FIS-B
Onboard Weather Radar
Both are valuable

8. As pilot, I have noticed:
A. The Graphical and textual information feels reliable.
B. It is less likely to request additional information from other source.
C. The Operational and weather decision-making situations have improved.
D. Difficulties to understand the presentation and information displayed.
E. Increased the pilot workload and time-consuming
F. Reduced pilot’s interaction with the ground-based weather professionals.
G. When both systems are on – exist a confusion to determine a sole weather broadcast.
H. The weather information displayed seems to be limited (e.g. resolution or update rate)

Attached is the link of the questionnaire, where you can save the answers.

Thanks a lot for your help !!!
Also, any comments related to this topic are very welcome.
