Unhappy Basic Info

I'm writing on behalf of my 12 year old son, who is trying to write about the various roles of the pilot, captain, first officer for a school assignment.

What are the basic roles of the pilot except for the obvious (flying the plane)? Is there a big difference between what the first officer does and the captain?

Is there are any good websites, books etc that you could recommend that might give an overview of this topic.

Thanks.

"Flying the Big Jets" by Stanley Stewart is the one that springs to mind first. An Amazon search is the best bet.

Other than that, responses from big iron drivers would get real up to date, horse's mouth info.
