Post Changing companies

My next door neighbor recently informed me that his pilot son, age 32, had QUIT United (after 4 years) to join Southwest. I thought he was nuts. Am I missing something here? It would seem to me that he has just thrown away a very good career. Any thoughts?

Don't think so. He was about to have the opportunity to upgrade to Captain, short haul for around the next two years if he had remained at UAL. I realise that Southwest has a certain reputation however, they are a mature company now. Could not see his reasoning. I would have thought his long term best interests would be best served by remaining at UAL. Certainly hate to see young guys make a big mistake.
