SYD 2nd airport
I'd be interested to know, especially from an ATC or pilot's perspective, how urgently a second airport is required at Sydney, given that the existing one seemed to cope with the increased traffic level for the Olympics pretty well?
The Australian Government have been mucking about with various proposals for years, but due to political pressures have still not made any firm decisions on the matter. Should they be getting on with it, or can the airport cope for the forseeable future?

Mr Creosote,
IMHO every proposal for a second airport at Sydney is a red herring or a "smoke & mirrors" act.
What will really happen is the public will be so frightened/confused/bewildered/demoralised that when the real option (the addition of a 4th runway at YSSY with parallel runway ops) is announced the public will be so relieved they'll just accept the inevitable and then we can get on with the real issues such as environmental inpact statements, handling the greenies, tree-huggers, letting the contracts to whoever pays the biggest backhander to the relevant state government ministers/authorities/movers/fixers/minders etc and then life will go on much as before except we will finally have a real international airport.
All other proposals (Badgerys Creek, upgrading Bankstown, Kurnell Peninsula etc) are just a "softening up" exercise. There is a real long-term plan in operation here and it's not being driven by the politicians!
"politics (n): a supposed occupation fit only for failed small-time criminals and legal-system drop-outs."
