Cool

Parents and kids ? Or perhaps the same reason there are 4 masks for every 3 seats.

Hey 'Expedite_climb' - I've noticed in some Cathay 747s that they don't have that extra dropdown oxy mask, only one for each seat!
But that's Cathay!

Just a thought.

jonno,

Do cathay allow babies under 2 to sit on their parents laps ?. If so there surely there is an issue with safety if what you say is true !

Perhaps however this was in a class which rarely has 100 % load factor ?

Dunno, never flown cathay,

Hey, the extra mask is also meant for the flight attendant, who might just happen to be there when decompression occurs.

There are no single masks, at least on Boeing and Airbus aircrafts. There are 2 masks minimum, even in toilets, C/A stations and crew rest bunks.

Well, Can`t believe none of you knows why is that! Before reading the airplane general you should read JAROPS!

Airplanes certificated above 25000 feet must have quick doning type oxygen masks for all seats plus 10% more distributed evenly along the airplane. That is why every row has 1 mask more, all toilets and FAs stations!

Cheers!

Dontsink,
actually the JAR state the 10% more masks AND 2 masks for each individual compartment such as C/A stations, toilets and crewrests bunks. The double mask are not a part of the 10%.
