Jumped out of the N22 & N24 and the only thing I recall the pilots saying was "A Nomad on a single engine takes you to the scene of the accident."

Nurse those little Allisons carefully and live in mortal fear of the dreaded hot-start! (N1 speed first, igniters next, fuel last!) I have video of a hot-start on the left engine of a N22...the flames, my God, the flames!!

Exceed not the max EGT when the suckers light-off and don't over-torque either. Enjoy the Nomad, it might have been a far better aircraft than it is, but it flies well enough as long as you are not in a hurry to go anywhere.

Thumbs down

The weakest link is the tail plane, it has a tendancy to fall off.

Funny how the Australian Defense forces no longer fly the type due to safety concerns!

Unhappy

Capt Claret makes a good point. If your Nomad "wags its tail" then you need the tail mods done. The problem is excessive movement of the all-flying horizontal stabiliser, you can actually see it flapping around and it's not a good look!

With the tail mods done the horizontal stab is rock-steady and the "Gonad" doesn't wag its tail any more.

The stab is pretty much right in the prop-wash, hence the problems initially. The Oz Army pranged one when the tail fell off, decided not to bother with tail mods and got rid of them. Think we sent a lot to the Indonesians, actually. Hmmmmm.

The mods aren't cheap, but for your own peace of mind try to find out if they have been done on any "Gonads" you fly.
