Strange event

Arived at LHR on Sunday 12th on BA92 from Toronto. About 10-15 thousand feet we suddenly heard a large bang in the undercarriage area. We were sitting over the wing in that area. It sounded just as though we had just done a fairly heavy landing.

Checked with the cabin crew and they said it was wake turbulence. Been flying professionally a long time and never heard anything like it.

Bird strike? Any ideas?

It was a B 777. Have flown as a pax on them many times, nothing like this.

Yeah, a loud bang on the bottom (actually a double bang) is exactly what I heard and felt crossing the wake of a C-130 in a (low-wing) 4-seater. Two hammer blows from the location of the wing spar.

It only takes a fraction of a second to cross a wake vortex (even in a 125-kt plane, let alone a 500-kt jet) So you don't get distinct rolls and bumps, just all the energy in one "WHAM!" Or in my slower plane, two fast whams in one second, one from each of the C-130's wingtip vortices.

Could have been a tyre blowing, it does happen on rare occasions if there's a weak spot developed and the outside pressure is low. I only had it once way back in '73 when I was working on the old Preston Radar upper sector at Lindholme, a BCal BA 11 had one go in the cruise at FL280; pilot didn't sound too perturbed but told us (ATC) and we passed the message on.

Easier to see a heavy landing than hear one. For example

A loud thud, ceiling tile falling, oxygen masks deploying and O/H baggage storage doors pop open.

If said aircraft taxis to jetport = heavy landing
Otherwise = said aircraft was shot down
