Tax relief to purchase Headset?
Hi,
I'm interested in purchasing an ANR headset soon and see that EIM50054 provides for tax relief for a new headset. Has anyone availed of this and if so, what % of the total cost of the headset do you get back?
Thanks

It all depends upon the tax rules of the country where you live (you do not indicate this).
I've been a tax payer in Australia, New Guinea, Singapore, the U.K., the Philippines, and the good ol' U.S.A.
In all of the above countries, any expenditure necessary in earning your income is allowed as a tax concession (This is particularly so if there is a Health or Safety issue, e.g. non-skid shoes if you have to climb on any wings for refuelling etc.)
Claim it, the worst that they can do is reject your claim!
A noise suppressing headset is both a necessary piece of work equipment for a pilot, with attendant health issues.

You would have to complete the self assessment form, and enter the full cost of the headset. You will be 'refunded' (ceteris paribus) a %ge of the cost according to your marginal rate of income tax. eg 40%.

but on what smokey says; for the UK, very little is accepted as tax refundable items. All NO to eg Suitcases, laptops, black shoes, etc, because they claim they could also have applications outside work. Thats why they sometimes specify particular items like headsets as allowable. I think it can be easier to get expenditure accepted if you are self employed though.
If only the UK were like Germany and a few other EU countries, where all sorts of stuff is accepted; even the cost of travel from home to work, and training costs (rightly so).
