Jumpseat possibility for future student?

I know since 9/11 the cockpit door is locked during the flight but is it possible to get advance security clearance? This summer I am flying with Thomsonfly and Ryanair, would it be wise to contact flight ops?

Sorry but I think your chances are virtually nil. It is now against D of T regulations to carry anyone who is not part of the operating crew on the flightdeck. Times have changed a great deal for the worse.

There's no chance you will get in the cockpit.

No chance you'll get on the F/D in flight, but if you ask nicely, they'll let you up the front once you've pulled on stand - bear in mind the crew will either be setting up for the next sector, or wanting to get off themselves, don't be surprised if they politely ask you to go (!) - you'll get a couple of mins tho I'm sure - just ask one of the cabin crew before you land . . . .

... or get a job/career that necessitates you being up there ... There are a few still around. When I am not at the pointy end, I still get the chance to sit up front with other crews (even of other EASA airlines). For sure though, you won't get up there for a jolly any more, you will need a damn good reason and an armfull of paper to back it up.

In the rest of europe the rules are a tad less strict than in the UK, so outside of the empire it is possible to sit up front if you know the right persons.

Pre 9-11 I had loads of Jump seat rides in the 737-200 series. These days will never be back.

Best you can do is hope one of them is at the galley when you depart. You can ask a question. You might get a couple of mins up front if you are lucky.

Without being detailed, for us, you can sit in the pointy end if your on Aviation Authority Business, a staff member positioning prior to a duty, a staff member (note: does not specify what role) on a staff ticket or a member of the public on a staff ticket accompanying the staff member.

In a nutshell, if your on a staff ticket (i.e. you have a mate at the airline) who can get you a ticket, your onto a winner.
