Smile What is 'Uniform Frequency'?

Dear all,

Yesterday at 35000 feet above France I heard a VP reg aircraft come on frequency with Paris with fairly weak transmissions. ATC complained that readability was 2. VP reg tried box two with no improvement and then requested a 'Uniform Frequency'. The controller came back with frequency 371.45.

What is a uniform frequency? what equipment do you need on board to pick one up or transmit? I hope I'm not overlooking the obvious.

Erm
normal aircraft frequency is in the VHF band - V = Victor

The frequency you quoted is in the UHF band - U = Uniform

I think the Uniform reference shows an Ex Mil or serving Mil Pilot with an a/c equiped to recieve UHF.

Can't help you with what type ypu would need to fit to your a/c to operate in UHF, but that is, as far as I know, usually for mil flights

Yep, U(niform) is for UHF - usually used to clarify and emphasise that the next frequency for an aircraft that has, up until then been using VHF, is going to be UHF.

Very few civil registered aircraft carry UHF radios, although I believe most NATO miltary aircraft carry radios which are VHF/UHF capable at 25 kz spacing (I think they're called 'PTR175s' but I stand to be corrected) As far as I'm aware, UHF Tx/RX aircraft radios are not available commercially.
