Unfreezing the ATPL
Hi all. Haven't posted on here since before I started training but here goes with possibly another stupid question.....
My company have scheduled me in for a sim which coincides almost exactly with me reaching 1500 hours.....
I have 1130 hours on the Airbus, 1410 hours total (including the required PIC and night bits) plus an additional 92 hours of Airbus simulator time. So that makes 1502 hours :-)
I have been struggling to find the information I'm after on LASORS but am I right in thinking that all hours in an Airbus simulator can count towards the maximum of 100, regardless of if it was with the motion on or off? Can FRASCA hours also be counted?
I was told that when you complete an LST or LPC in the simulator that those hours can count as actual PICUS or COP hours rather than sim time, is that correct?
Thanks for any help you can offer.

Nearly A Learner,
I spoke to the CAA just before I had the hours, you can use up to 100 hours of sim time toward the 1500 hours total, so you would appear to have enough hours to do the ATPL skill test.
Of the 100 hours sim time, 25 of those can be FNPT2 time.
"I was told that when you complete an LST or LPC in the simulator that those hours can count as actual PICUS or COP hours rather than sim time, is that correct?"
No, you can't log the sim time as actual flight time.
Cheers

Why not wait another 4/5 weeks and unfreeze your ATPL when you have 1500 hours real flying time (as opposed to simulated flying time)?
I know it's nice to have the ATPL in your hands, but unless an immediate command opportunity exists (unlikely with 1500 hours), why the rush?

IRRenewal - I know how he/she feels!
If you miss this opportunity then it is another year before you can do it again. All you want is that green book!
I know people who have had LPCs when they have been a few hours short and have had to wait another 12 months...anything can happen in a year and although it might not make much difference, I would prefer to be out of work with an ATPL than a CPL.
If you're struggling, try to get your company to postpone your LPC as long as possible to make sure you have the hours. Credit whatever you can towards it, simulated or otherwise.

Hi all and thanks for the replies.
At least now I have the full 100 hours sim time but I think I will be around 20 hours short in total. I would love to wait 4 or 5 weeks but I cannot postpone the sim and I cannot fly in the UK again until I have completed the sim (been working in Switzerland for the same company under a different AOC). I have already arranged for the sim to include the necessaries (for me that is a manual thrust raw data ILS in the Airbus).
Looks like I will have to wait another six months, pay for another sim or just send it off and take a chance.....

In my company which I believe is the same company that Nearly a Learner is talking about unfreezing gives you £8500 on your basic.
You have to have the 1500 hours before you do the skills test. So therefore if Nearly a Learner doesn't have them by his/her next sim the next opportunity to unfreeze will be in 6 months time.
So there's 4250 good reasons to want to get the ATPL unfrozen as soon as possible.

Assuming you work for the company that I'm thinking of, I'd go and hire a Cessna and burn 20 hours of holes in the sky to make sure I had the hours!

When I did mine, you could only do it every year on an LPC (not an OPC).....seems like it has changed though provided you can get your company to agree to modify the sim session to incude the additional items!
I wouldn't bother just sending it off anyway - I tried that and they just sent it all straight back!!

If you have 1410 flying hours total, then you already have the required hours (with the 100hrs sim) without a doubt. I had about the same.

Oh, and if you are working for a certain "orange" company, the training department will just tell you to email the Training Captain to ask him if he will do the relevant bits in your sim. Don't count on them to arrange it for you.
Good luck
