QNH setting?

HI all,

I'm an airline pilot used to fly boeing before now been on the airbus for about a year and a half....

On the boeing to change from local QNH to Standard after depature was when A/c is clean and above MSA or trasition alt and cleared to FL.... on the Airbus its once clean and cleared to a FL then we set it to standard...
now i was thinking about it the other day the 25nm MSA is based on Local QNH obviously cause its above MSL, so isnt safer to set it above the MSA?....Is it an airbus thing or the airline?.. and would like to know what you guys think about it and how you do it..

thanks

On A300 we set 1013 at transition but on a day like today in the UK with very low QNH its a good idea to set it early when cleared to FL. Also in these conditions or around high ground leave Standby Alt on QNH until above MSA. (Gives a warm feeling)

Used to be called airmanship.

There has been an effort about to make it procedure to change to 1013 mb upon being cleared to a FL to reduce level busts. Many (a majority) of level busts evidently occurs when the crew climbs to the level, but in the heat of the battle forgot to reset the altimeters. This seems a logical way of handling it especially in airspace where the transition altitude in low i.e. London TMA and UK airspace. I would advocate moving the transition layer up to something like...................17,000 and FL180. It's a Yank thing, it takes us time to catch up with the plane.

Setting the mains onto 1013 when cleared to a FL or when the SID determines it, setting 1013 after Aa. Then leaving the standby on Qnh till passing MSA or transition whichever is higher seems to work for us.
