Why the F in RTF?

Why is the abbreviated form of Radiotelephony RTF and not just RT? What does the F stand for?

F- 'Fony'?
RT also stands for Route, and Return. Is it a big deal?

Tried Ask.com and got not very far. I don't think it means much more than Radio-Tele-Fone.

RTG was the abbreviation for Radio Telegraphy... Maybe the F was introduced in the dim and distant past to distinguish between them..??

In ICAO terms RTF is an abbreviation rather than an acronym. The ICAO Vocabulary (Doc 9713) entry says
radiotelephony; radiotelephone; RTF
A form of radiocommunication primafib intended for the exchange of information in the form of speech. (An 2, An 11)

An abbreviation and not an acronym I agree... but it doesn`t explain the F?

For Fone, don't ya know nothin?

(As God is my witness I swear this is true; when I first moved to Oklahoma City in the Telephone Directory Book [called the "Yellow Pages"] if you looked under "Fone Company" it directed you to Southwestern Bell Telephone Company. Cross my heart and hope to die that is true.)

windriver, you have to be a bit open-minded and think Americanese - LocaLiZer.

And my point about the abbreviation is that, unlike an acronym, the letters don't have to stand for anything. When you see an abbreviation you simply replace it with the full word.

If such things bother you, don't even start to think about the Q-code!!
