IFR Question

Hi,

On a non precision approach, one may descend when established with in 5 degrees of the final approach track amongst other criteria, however what are the distance requirements, ie you can't be 50NM out on the final approach track and commence descent. Is there any defining criteria?

Can't see anything obvious in ICAO 8168.

The defined tracks are set in stone along with the vertical profile - You can only descend IAW with the procedure once established on the tracks and the distances are protected so you can plan your descent to 'hit' these altitudes on crossing the points, but you can't descend below these 'hard' altitudes until you have crossed them.

If terrain is an issue you may have to shuttle in a hold then carry out the procedural non-precision approach, however, you can be radar controlled onto the final approach track (ie, ATC will descend you down to platform altitude and put you on an intercept heading to complete the apporach).

I believe you're after when can we start descend after getting established on a straight in (not full procedure). We have a company SOP that for an ILS, provided we're established (within half deflection LLZ, ie. 1,25') we can arm LOC(for the LLZ) within 17NM, and arm APP(for both LLZ+GS) within 10NM.
Can't help you with a reference.

It's regarding a NPA, not an ILS. . . . .
