If you hadn't got into flying....
PPRuNe Handmaiden
Probably doing what I did to pay for this flying lark.
Working at uni in the biology department. Would have done a degree part time.
Definitely would have saved a bundle but also wouldn't have seen a great deal of Oz and now Europe, North Africa, Russia and the ME. Now earning a lot more than my former colleagues.

Currency trader.
I recently enjoyed a pint in London with someone 5 years younger than me whom I had once hired for a summer job.
Last year he earned £240k salary trading between the dollar, sterling, yen and euro.

But is he happy?
Damn right he is, I bet!
I'd love to be doing something that has more room to stretch myself than flying will allow, something a little less mentally suffocating.
Still time.

Bet he's got a bigger office than you too! Mind you I suspect that the view from the window isn't so good!!
Sod the view, feel the 911 Carrera 4S in Slate Grey Metallic and Black/Terracotta interior... I was rather taken with it. At barely 28 I don't envy the little sod in any way.

Not to mention the fact that if he likes flying he can take himself off to the US and do an FAA licence and IR add on, buy a nice little aircraft and go on weekend jollies across Europe and the like with his mates.

I'd be a complete waster. I'd probably be earning sod all, travel around a bit and spend what I had in seedy bars and clubs getting smashed.....
Oh hang on.......
That seems to describe my life rather well anyway.

Certainly I'd be doing something else aviation related if I wasn't able to be a pilot. Possibilities could include such occupations as an air traffic controller, airport manager, line crew...but my heart would certainly not be with any of those.

When these threads crop up it's always heartening to see how many have substituted highly paid City/banking careers for not so well paid pilot careers. Good choice, I think.

Now are we talking about what would do for money or for enjoyment? For enjoyment, I'd be a part-time gliding instructor (model making when not) but for money I'd go weedle my way into the City to become a modern day thief what's now called a "Banker".
