777-200lr

I read somewhere a while back - I can't find the article now - that the 777-200LR was a more economical aircraft than the 777-200ER. First of all, is this statement true?

Looking at the price of the LR vs ER:

Taking into account that most airlines operate their 777s on long-haul routes, wouldn't initial higher cost of the LR prove to be an investment over the life of the aircraft?

Thanks
