FREA

The BALPA negotiated FREA is a 2 part allowance totaling £950 onto your UK tax coding. This is made up of £850 for general expenditure and £100 for travel expenditure.

Hope this helps.

Cheers MS

You might want to check this carefully, since I believe the allowance is for tax year 2006/7 not 2005/6 which would be the return you are now completing ?

Employment section 1.32 for travel expenses.
Employment section 1.33 for the FREA.

I believe all the details you need are on the BALPA website.

I don't understand how this tax allowance that BALP have arranged - perhaps someone can clarify...

Does the £850 allowance get added onto the standard annual personal tax free allowance of £5225? In which case the saving for me is 22% of £850.

Or does it mean I will pay £850 less in tax per year?

Cheers,

It is added to your tax code.

Two thirds of your BALPA subs can be claimed back too, my tax code is now 684 which I believe means I can earn 6840 before paying tax.

All I did was phane the tax office and ask if my tax code could be changed. He asked me what I did and it all happened automatically from there - they send your new tax code to your employer and it is included in PAYE so corrected itself via my monthly pay!
