744 Thrust Limit

How is it possible to change the active thrust limit when operating in vertical modes other than VNAV?

For example: If you were to takeoff without VNAV armed and you go straight from TOGA to FLCH-SPD, will the thrust limit still change to CLB at the thrust reduction altitude/flaps 5, even though VNAV isn't engaged? And if not, is it possible without accessing the FMC pages?

I've heard that pressing the THR button above 400ft RA will give you CLB THR?

Correct! If you hit the Thrust button above 400' thrust will reset to whatever has been armed on the THR LIM page - CLB, CLB1, CLB2 etc.

Even if FLCH is active?

Yup, that's the purpose of the THR button, even though some 'Big Airlines' don't teach it's use.
In any case you will always be able to change the Thrust Limit on the THR LIMIT page of the FMC....

Does VNAV have to be active in order for the thrust limit to change automatically at TR altitude?
