Kit for long-haul

Hi folks,
I'm about to start flying long-haul with my new airline, (RHS 767), are there any bits of kit you just can't live without when you're poling here, there and everywhere?
I'll start the list:-

1. Sense of humour....

Agreed on that.

I know that I find a good book and my IPOD with external speakers for the hotel room to be indispensable.

JackOffallTrades,
I bet you've got a box of tissues in your kit.

Depends how long you're away for...

For my money - portable DVD and one of these:

http://magellans.co.uk/store/Packing..._Folders?Args=

Life is too short to iron things twice!

I also keep a washbag permanently packed so I don't have to pack/ un-pack the stuff at home all the time.

Foreign sim card if going to the same country a lot - cheaper than roaming usually.

Hi there:

Well done on the new job. The 767 is a nice ship. I always take these items to make things more comfortable both during the flight and when down route.

1. Inflatable neck pillow
2. Eye Mask
3. Ear Plugs
4. Lip balm/small jar of vaseline
5. Moisturiser (no I am not gay)
6. Saline Nasal spray - when trying to sleep in the aircraft the air con can dry the membrane of the nostrils causing discomfort.
7. Toothbrush/Paste
8. Deoderant
9. Fruit tea bags/ Green tea. It's nice to have a refreshing hot drink to hydrate you and it makes a change from tea/coffee.
10. Meaty magazine like the Economist or whatever floats your boat. Something that will last you two long 10 hour sectors. Books aren't as good because you can't really concentrate on them while monitoring the ship. Save the books for the hotel pool.
11. Portable DVD player
12. Mp3 player....with external speakers....good for parties in your room.
13. Sudoku
14. Handkerchief in your pocket. Don't know about you but I sweat like a bas when in all these hot countries and lifting bags through terminals etc (no I'm not fat). It's amazing how useful a hankie is to mop your stressed out brow.
15. Finally a laptop. You can use it for webcam to home/free phone calls/porn/dvd's...work if you are really bored...many uses that are invaluable down route.

Hope all of that helps.

I think saline is fine for general cleansing but if you're more interested in moisturizing then you should try Ponaris Nasal Emollient:

http://www.medichest.com/ponarisnasalemollien.html

It's not the cheapest stuff in the world but it works real well for long haul flights as the oil doesn't seem to be "diluted" over time.

The directions say a half dropper per nostril, but I just put some on a fingertip and that works well enough.

It's definitely part of my "long haul kit".
Good luck.

Blimey!!

I had no idea some people took so much stuff. Spare smalls, wash bag, a set of casual clothes and an unironed uniform shirt is all I put in my case. No laptop because I dislike computers but still wouldn't want to break it or lose it anyway. No ipod either (I don't own one), no nasal spray cos some other crew members usually get up my nose, no moisturiser cos I'm a man, no eye mask cos I have eyelids, ear plugs only for doing the walk around and sometimes a glossy mag full of girls...... Oh and I normally use the tissues I find in the aircraft toilets.

Does it still work when it's on your finger tip?

Everyone is a comedian these days...

Ok then, one more time for those in the back...

Just dab a little on your fingertip and then stick it where the sun doesn't shine!

Then don't forget to wash your hands.......twice.......with antibacterial soap.

Were sunnies on that list? Maybe reading glasses too because when you're really tired, maybe focusing is that little bit harder if you're losing it (like I did, years ago).
Chewing gum
Polos
Family size pack prophylactics
Emergency medical kit (syringes, dressings etc- have you seen what they're like in African hospitals?)
Drinking water (might I recommend Volvic?) for some places.
Painkillers
Credit card
Cash- dollars as well
Mobile phone, and charging method
Swimming cossie
Slippers or sandals- you really don't want to walk barefoot on some of those hotel carpets, believe me.
Torch
Don't forget the Flying Licence and Passport
Yellow jacket

Did you ever come to the right place to ask this!

I have a Swiss Army knife type device but it's a flat card with a small pair of scissors, small knife, screwdriver, pin etc in it. Someone bought me it as a simple gift years ago I take it just about everywhere I go, sometimes I'd be lost without it.

A couple of toothpics, incredibly fustrating not having them when you need one.

Camera, batteries, chargers, glasses, torch, mp3 player...? It very quickly all starts to add up. I was always amazed and how much crap I'd take on a weekend trip (non-flying) must of which I never used but knew rightly the time I didn't take it would be the time I need it.

Gulp- so I did!
And, this could be more important than it sounds.....earplugs. Depending on where you go (like Africa), you sometimes really don't want pool water or shower water, and all that lives in it, festering in your ears. In fact, unless you are somewhere clean, don't go in the pool, and anyway, never immerse the ears or mouth in the water! I watch people doing the crawl in those pools and think 'what a hero! Do you know what you're doing?'

Don't forget your manners, when the COMMANDER says...gear UP.
And also, practise 'yer HF procedures, as no COMMANDER worthy of the name ever uses this...radio.

Just kidding, folks...well, just a little.

Bloody hell - you blokes must have big suitcases!

What's wrong with a pair of thongs (the ones that go on your feet) and a six pack - and bugger all else.

Welcome to the tropics.

well, if all you're wearing is a pair of thongs on your feet, I'd urge caution when you open a tinnie using the ring pull!!

Electrical plug adaptors. About 6 types seems to cover the world. I also bought a 110V Nokia charger for my phone for U.S. and Canada stops, much easier than a transformer. (I think it's needed in Hong Kong also, I think that they're 110V, but I'm never there long enough to need a recharge).

Regards,

Old Smokey
