Book on jet engines

Having just spent 9 hours contemplating the side of an engine pod on a BA 777 from Houston to London, I have decided a book on the modern jet engine is something that I would like to read. Can anyone recommend a suitable book on the subject. As a non ambitious PPL, I am never going to have to do an exam on the subject, but would like to know more than what one would find in an encyclopedia

Thanks
