Path descent and speed descent

hi..after browsing thru the FMST guidebook...i still dont have a clear mind on this particular subject..i understand that for path descent..the a/c maintains on the path via pitch..and the pilot controls the airspeed(does this mean the pilot has to control the throttle manually even with A/T armed?)..while speed descent is that the a/c controls the airspeed via pitch..and the pilot maintains the a/c on the vertical profile by thrust....can anyone please elaborate more on the uses of both type of descents?
