Re-Heat...
So you say basically I stand a chance of getting a jumpseat ride this summer when I go to Vietnam, providing its a non us or Uk registered aircraft, and I contact Malyasian airlines first maybe with a little about me, flight details as well as a photocopy of passport page and PPL?? Thanks

Oh, the reason I was going to contact was because I am travelling on a school trip about 30 other kids and it would make the teacher at least clear of what I was doing...

Any communication you make to the airline before the flight will never reach the crew on the day- of that I can assure you! By all means photocopy your stuff, and ask for it to be delivered direct to the flight crew on the aeroplane.
Let me sum it up:
UK and US: virtually impossible.
Rest of the world: Very difficult, but not impossible. Bringing meaningful credentials may help, and being very lucky as well.
And that fits my experience.
Pre 9/11: Dozens and dozens of LH, BA, Spantax, and several others.
Post 9/11: About 20 jumpseat rides on A320s, Dash 8 and Do 328. No chance with LH and BA.
Strange times we're living in...!
