Businessmen travel as well - brand name in mind may make the difference. Career opportunity for people as well - that too requires advertising and brand recognition.
Accenture for example don't sell to the public either, but you see them sponsoring and advertising.

Re: why Airbus advertises?
Boeing advertises on cable tv in the states all the time often sponsoring business related news or programming - and these spots are not all defence or aerospace related - many I've seen promote the Commercial Aircraft Division.
Never saw a Fly-Boeing billboard yet, but you never know.

Corporate advertising, rather than product advertising is increasing. It is believed that enough people will have a view about the nationality of the a/c manufacturer [or some other factor] to influence ticket choice. The views may be based on newspaper speculation or simple patriotism but it will be a view!
I suspect that the two manufacturers also state to their customers that they will promote directly to the public. Boeing have done so with 'dreamliner' and came up with a brilliant paint job and made it look a bit like a dolphin. When you see the model in plain white - then you can see that it looks like the next generation of 767/777 that it actually is and it looks entirely standard.
I expect that when Airbus really start promoting the 380, it will be with close ups that accentuate the curve of wing/fin/tail. Images shoing how large the thing is would be anti-productive.
I suggest that corporate advertising tells us more about the corporate than they think it does!

Capt CB,
Its called brand equity, the lines will follow demand and perceptive demand, if they can't flog the idea, then jo pub won't follow it, remember the rule , the "consumer is fickle"
Paxb,
Fairly accurate, but in this age we don't buy or purchase products (unless its toilet roll) we purchase ideas about who we want to be, ie buy an Audi or a BM, you want to be bond or Thomas Crown or some other man about town spy type guy (whuch frankly is silly , but there ya go), the whole point is to have the public clambouring (sic) for a go in the new bus, it could be the most economically, safe, fast, comfortable people mover in the universe , but if the carriers can't flog the idea of {insert perception here} then the punters won't go for it and its a long shot for the lines.
yawn , 15 years in FMCG and this is what I contribute, I need something like an audi TT to make me into Jason Bourne or something..........oh, kids awake..........be right back..sans milk patches if I'm lucky.......

Re: why Airbus advertises?
7gcbc pretty much answers the question, but there may also be a measure of "Co-operative marketing" going on.
The airlines may well want their customers to be happy flying on their Airbuses, so it could be part of a deal that Airbus does some core advertising on brand awareness as part of a package with the airlines, and the advertsing spend counts as part of the sales package.
Same goes for foodstuff advertising, you don't go to a Danone shop to buy chilled yoghurts etc, you go to your local supermarket. But Danone see the marketing spend as something that is worth money to the supermarket chains and thus count it as part of the cost of sale.

Re: why Airbus advertises?
25 years ago, when the 2-crew Airbus was coming into view, the Flight Engineer's union was putting out radio ads in the USA extolling the benefits of a third man in the cockpit. UAL maintained the F/E in 737-200's when everyone else had dumped them.
Despite Airbus's FFCC option (Fwd-Facing Crew Concept, with F/E at the center console), the world transitioned pretty rapidly to just two in the sharp end.

Boeing is doing it to impress and create an exciting image for the buisness people, after all it is them who manage the funds which buy the shares.
After all they are in the buisness of selling shares but not building planes.
Airbus is less so becase EADS is more or less run by the European covernments.
