Manchester United

Watched this on TV the other night. Without lifting the lid on "tv dramatization" bit, anybody know where the accident report or the truth can be found.?

Re: Manchester United

I think it's unlikely that in real life they had cyrillic altimeters & VSIs which spun like crazy even though they hadn't left the ground. I also very much doubt that when the Capt called for full power the co-pilot pulled back hard on his yoke.

Sorry, doesn't answer your question, but how much does an aviation consultant cost?

Re: Manchester United

Air Disasters by Stanley Stewart (ISBN 0-09-956200-6) contains a pretty thorough account. Probably in one of the MacArthur Job books as well.

FWI the interior of the a/c looked OK and the CGI to put an AS57 tail on an Antonov was quite neat. Thought the content of TV prog was overdramatised, pity because there was presumably more archive film, including the interview with James Thain, to explore.

Why cannot actors get pilot's RT procedure and intonnation correct instead of repeating techno-babble?

And for spotters of anachronisms would a BEA red square logo flight bag, as carried by one of the journos, be around in Feb 1958?

Airbanda: well spotted! It was still the 'Keyline' logo at the time.

Looked at all that. To be honest I was after the pilot side of things as the program didn't make us look like the sharpest knife in the box...

For example there was mention of a "boost surge" on (at least) one of the engines and not to mention the effect the nose wheel had on things in slush (as opposed to tail wheel aeroplanes).

Re: Manchester United

A long time ago, but IIRC the Captain's name was Thain (or possibly Thane) and the German authorities blamed him for not de-icing the wings. He maintained there was no ice and that slush on the runway had slowed them so that when an engine 'surge' (over-rich mixture) dropped the revs after V1 there was not enough runway to abort. A second (British) inquiry agreed with this position, but I don't know if that was a technical or political conclusion.
I surmise the nosewheel 'theory' is that it was ploughing the snow/slush ahead as opposed to a tailwheel which would have been off the ground and free by then. ?
