Licences, yes. Logbooks, no (unless you need your P.1/S time signing by the captain to upgrade your licence).

Im almost certain that Instructors would, this is because they are classed as P1 when instructing. My personal opinion is that its always good practice to carry as much necessary documentation around with you. After all with ever increasing stringent rules and regulations being omplemented left right and centre, it's best to be safe than sorry.

Licences: definitely yes.

Logbooks: apparently, CAA current guideline is to leave them at home. This ensures that a personal record of flying hours is available in the event of an incident (or so I'm told).

I don't see what difference it makes whether you're an instructor or not as your instructor's rating (class, type, or whatever) will appear on page 4 of your licence.

License yes, at all times while on duty. It's as Backtrack says for log books. Leave them behind so there's a permanent record in case of an incident/accident. It also used to be forbidden, in Canada anyway, to carry the aircraft journey log and the aircraft tech logs together on the same aircraft, for the same reason.

However, in JARs a pilot is required to complete his logbook after every flight. So on a two sector day, by the letter of the law it is impossible not to carry a logbook.

Not being pedantic - honest - and I don't have the book of words to hand, but if that is a direct quote, it doesn't say immediately after every flight, does it? I am not alone in making several flights in a day, and completing my logbook when it's convenient, perhaps several days later.

Re: Are pilots required to carry their licences and logbooks??

I never carry my logbook in the aircraft. Not for security or backup purposes, but simply because I dont ever need it up there.

Most entries get into the book within a day or so, the longest i've gone was a month between a flight and writing it in.

My backup copy is an excel spreadsheet which I also enter every flight in, and that keeps track of recency and all sorts of other fun things for me.

According to the ANO 2005 Section 1 Part 4 Article 35:

Particulars of each flight during which the holder of the log book acted either as a member of the flight crew of an aircraft or for the purpose of qualifying for the grant or renewal of a licence under this Order, as the case may be, shall be recorded in the log book at the end of each flight or as soon thereafter as is reasonably practicable
