The general public, with a great deal less training (i.e. like me) manage to drive cars with the gear shift in right hand (US, Canada, Europe, etc) or in left hand (UK, other civilized places ) without destroying gearboxes or other problems. I find it takes about two gear changes before I'm not even thinking about which hand it is anymore.

It'd be a lot more entertaining if there was an aircraft where the effect of control movement was reversed; controls forward to climb, etc.
