Seatbelt Sign - Auto or Off?

Good evening,

I have never managed to suss out what the Auto selection actually does. Obviously the Off selection just completely turns the signs off, but most pilots I have seen put the seatbelt sign to Auto.

Can any of you gents/ladies please clear this matter up for me? I would also be interested to know as flight crew what setting you use personally?

Thanks

Auto turns the lights off above a certain altitude (e.g., about 10,000' in the 744), and on again below that.

On the 757/767, when the seatbelts selector is in the Auto mode, the signs automatically come on at flaps or gear extension, and off again when the flaps and landing gear retracted.

However, the signs automatically come on regardless of the switch position if cabin alt is greater than 10.000' or at any altitude when the oxygen masks are deployed.

Hmmm... I knew many aircraft had the Auto "No Smoking" signs attached to gear or flaps, but not "Seat Belts"...

Well now you do! The 737 & 747 in auto also have the seat belts attached. However, standard practice for most seems to be to give a "10 or 20 minutes to landing!" call to prewarn the cabin crew and manually switch the seat belts on anyway.

The 744s I flew had auto seat belt signs attached to altitude, not flaps or gear. The Classics I now fly have no auto seat belt signs.

Maybe Boeing offers an option, but I am not aware of it...

You are now..!

B737 Classic, Seat Belts in 'Auto' - signs come on with flap extension; No Smoking in 'Auto' - signs come on with gear extension.

Believe a similar set-up exists for the A320/321 I used to fly as well.

Honestly true. We all live and learn, eh?

the following is out of the A320 FCOM:

-SEAT BELTS sw
ON : The FASTEN SEAT BELT and RETURN TO SEAT signs come on, alongwith a low tone chime.
OFF : Signs are off. A low tone chime sounds, when the lights go off (depending on the CIDS/CAM programming).

- NO SMOKING sw
ON : The EXIT and NO SMOKING signs come on, with a low tone chime.
AUTO : The EXIT signs come on, when the landing gear is extended, and they go off when the landing gear is retracted. A low tone chime sounds (depending on the CIDS/CAM programming), when the lights go on or off.
The NO SMOKING signs are on.
OFF : The EXIT and NO SMOKING signs are off. A low tone chime sounds, when the lights go off (depending on the CIDS/CAM programming).

Note : If the cabin altitude goes above 11300 feet (± 350 feet), the cabin illuminates (depending on the CIDS/CAM programming), and the FASTEN SEAT BELT, EXIT and NO SMOKING signs come on, regardless of the SEAT BELTS and NO SMOKING switches.

In AUTO..Seat Belt Sign is attached to the Flaps, and the No Smoking Sign is attached to the gear.
