This is a well debated subject that has surfaced many times before. I have flown for a number of UK charter and one freight airline and only one of them still issues hats to their pilots. Blame the bean counters as I was once told they cost about £30 each and that's a huge saving if none of your pilots have them anymore......
Many hated them, many never wore them, but, and this is the saddest thing; they were introduced as part of a uniform to give authority. That's why forces wear hats, the higher the rank, the more the scrambled egg. But as with so much in aviation and the UK in general, there has been a dumbing down with less and less respect shown for figures in positions of responsibility, be they Police, pilots, train drivers, security workers, guards etc etc.
If a captain put his hat on to have a word with someone it once gave him a greater air of authority. Sadly now that is probably not so, even if they had a hat! So the bean counters have won out again...........
I always looked forward to getting a command and having my hat with some fig leaves on it under my arm.....sadly it wasn't to be and I'm going grey........

I don't respect people because of what they stick on their head. I respect them for their abilities and merits. Most security guards wear all sorts of braid and hats. They are mostly jobsworths with very little eduation - they command less respect than the average joe walking down the road.
I don't wear my hat much for the following reasons.
1. Not on the pan as it is a hazard both if it blows off and by restricting my upward and sideways vision.
2. Not in the bus or in the ops centre at work, as I would look a tit.
3. Not in a hotel as again I look at tit and being inside (especially in a lift) it feels rude.
4. Not in the aeroplane as grabbing it every time I leave the flightdeck is an unnecessary and silly thing to have to worry about - especially if I am leaving to go to the loo.
5. The only place left is the terminal, when I walk through it, and I wear it then. However, that doesn't happen all that often, so I generally carry the bloody thing everywhere. Its a high price to pay to have a key holder.
Often it is good to get on the passengers level to help diffuse a situation and having the authority stamp of a hat doesn't help. I can think of only one or two situations where it would help - and in those it is more of a comfort thing than actually helping the situation.

I still wear my hat.
I wear it for the same reason that "Ross" did in "Fate is the Hunter".
and "if you can neither look too good, nor talk too wise.........."

I always thought the hat was "worn"by jamming it into the armpit. It now seems they were supposed to be balanced on top of the head! Why???
Wigs, cummerbunds, doublets and hose, hats.Next ridiculous decorative tassle to go will be the Tie.Sooner the better imho.If you need a hat to give you authority become a traffic warden.

sneaky sneaky
Put your crew list into it, so by the time you walk out to the airplane and have forgotten the senior's/purser's/cabin boss' name, you can courteously doff your hat and have a sneaky look into it;into the good books, tea for the rest of the day.

Hats and Uniforms
My favourites where the old Aeroflot hats that where about as high as Empire State building and as wide as football stadium. Today the top ten list leader would be Mexicana or Aeromexico Captains hat that has so much gold on it that the poor sod wearing it needs to have a neck support.
Glad we are don't have hats like that. Actually we do not have hats at all anymore.
However professional pilots with most companies are supposed to wear an uniform. The present day trend or rather fashion where the look is going into "Business casual" normal suits with stripes on them is something I presonally do not much care for. If one has to wear a uniform, hat or no hat, may it look like a uniform.

If you're ever passing through KSEA, don't take your hat to the museum of flight, unless you're prepared to loose it!
