Do not exceed 250kts within 10,000' AGL until you are very experienced- do not muss about with terrain. Always have in your mind likely track miles to landing. Try not to take flap too early- 20 track miles to go should be enough. Constantly assess once you take flap whether you are high/low on the ideal profile- keep in mind your ideal target 'gates' on the way in so you will have an idea how you stand- 9000'/30 miles, 6000'/20m miles, 3000'/10 miles, aim for final flap at 2000' or 1500' after gear locked down. Follow proper checklists, give yourself time until well into it. You should soon develop a 3d 'sense' of how you are doing. Don't trust FMS position- map shifts are common in Africa. Always check map position against aids. If you screw it up, don't hesitate to go around and try again- most accidents are caused by continuing when that voice is saying 'I don't like this!'. Always have final approach aid tuned and check it! Landing at the wrong airfield after a beautiful visual approach is career limiting!
