Well as a member of the self loading cargo fraternity I can say that I think the hat is v important. As other posters have mentioned, it offers the pax a definiate indication as to who is in charge, provides an image of authority and stops you looking like waiters.
As a wannabe I would say that I would want to wear one for all the reasons mentioned and my Grandma would think I looked much smarter!
