professional pilots questions?

Hello.
Do there happen to be any airline pilots out there who wouldnt mind answering a few questions on their job?
Im doing a little research and have some questions on the exact role of the pilot. What skills are necessary to be a captain and what it is like working for an airline. What the job entails apart from flying an aircraft etc?

I have read many many books and articles etc, but would like some first hand advice if possible.

I was once advised that an ability to do sums and drink copiuosly would qualify me to become a pilot.
