Pilots - The principle of Seniority

Hello Guys,

I need your help for a study research I am presently doing.

It seems to me that the rules and regulations for a promotion from FO to CPT are quite different in each country.
The only term that is always used is the word "Seniority".

Can anyone of you maybe give me a description of the rules and regulations he/she is flying under and maybe a link to a webpage
so that I can quote a legal text about that issue?

Thanx for any reply,

Regards Phil
