Stab trim calculations

Can anyone tell me what a "rule of thumb" might be in calculating your stab trim from take-off? I'm sure it will differ from aircraft to aircraft but just a little something you might work out is what would interest me. I know there is a stab trim card on some planes to allow you to see what your settings are based upon weight, CoG, etc. If anyone could show me a copy of that card that would be ideal but I would settle for how to work out the math.

One final question...

In many flight plans I will see the following: "CPT UL9 MALOT/N0461F360..." I know this has to do with the step climb but I am unclear how this is determined and does it mean that you step before, during or after MALOT.

I appreciate any responses.

Cheers!
