FL100 Speed 250Kts

Hello,

Any idea why speed reduction is usually set to FL100?

Trafic, Noise, Bird or something else?

Many Thanks.

I did the search as BOAC advised and read the responses. However, I was under the impression that 747's and 777's had 280 below FL100. Is this true?

Cheers!

Is this confusion between SOPs and ATC requirements? I'm just guessing but 250kts below FL100 may be an national ATC-type restriction as one operates in busier airspace - TMAs, etc. However, I was never shy of saying "no ATC speed control" and saw many, many aircraft fly considerably faster than 250 below 100.
