Airline Money

I was reading in another post about BA not buying anymore aircraft until they were at the most, 3 Billion pounds in debt.

My question is quite simply - how can an airline be in so much debt? Surely profits all go towards paying off debt? Dont aircraft manufacturers, or perhaps the airline's accountants not allow them to buy anything until they are not in debt?

It doesn't make sense. But of course, there is some high profile reason i'm sure.

Look forward to some responses.
