Painted fan spinners: Just for visibility?

At Gatwick I noticed a couplt of different designs; the CF-6 on 767's seemed to feature a crescent moon shape on one side, of the cone, and a 'blob' near the middle. The CFM-56 737's seem to have tight little spirals with only a couple of turns...always very pretty to look at, and nearly always something that catches a cameraman's eye when filming passenger jets.

I wondered what they're for. Is it just to show fan movement to ground crew, who's hearing may impaired by a headset? I can see how dark the inside of an engine cowling I can, and how hard it must be to tell if it's moving sometimes..or are they just cosmetic?
