Single or Twin?

A couple of weeks ago I was watching a programme about Antarctica.

Michael Palin was travelling to the south pole and the aircraft they were using appeared to be a single engined otter.

Why wouldn't you go for a twin when operating in that kind of environment?

Just curious.
