BGS and AVex
 

Hello! Im Gonçalo and I´m a ATPL Student in Portugal. I have British Ground School Books and my Question Bank is Aviation Exam. This combo is a pain in the ass, because BGS don´t follow EASA 2020 and Aviation Exam chapters, so I don´t know how can i study. Any advices? Thanks in advance.

I´ll attatch some photos so you can better understand what i´m saying.

Each school writes their own syllabus and Aviation Exam is not a school, it's a question bank.

I found no issues using BGS lessons then AvExam. i didn't touch the question bank until I had fully finished a module including all progress tests. Then I answered all questions on AvExam and went back and resat any I got wrong. For any I got wrong, I read the explanation on AvExam and went back to the BGS notes to revise. Once I had correctly answered all questions in AvExam, I switched to ATPLQ (for Austro) and again answered every single question in the bank, revisiting the ones I got wrong and then kept doing tests on ATPLQ using recently seen questions for Austro right up until my exam, even doing practice exams in the car park of the test centre just before the exam started......

I used the following timetable:

Finish BGS lessons 5-6 weeks before exam date. Attend every webinar you can while studying.
Attend BGS revision week.
2-3 weeks of AvExam, tests everyday till all questions completed
Two weeks of ATPLQ
Sit Exam

I used this system and did my exams in four sittings:

1. Gen Nav, Met, HPL and Instrumentation
2. Air Law, Radio Nav, Flight Perf, AGK
3. Mass & Balance, VFR Comms, IFR Comms
4. Op Procedures, PoF, Performance

I also tried to avoid more than one exam per day.

At the time ATPLQ was known to be one of the best for Austro but if you are sitting exams with a different NAA then you want to use a different QB for your final exam prep. For example ATPLGS was well regarded for UK CAA with a last 200 function.

This system worked well for me. The BGS lessons were good for gaining an understanding and I thought the order in which the lessons were presented were good and logical. There were broken down well meaning even on busy days I could fit a lesson it. AvExam was a great follow up to refine my understanding and plug gaps in my knowledge due to their detailed explanations and the student comments section of AvExam was a treasure trove of neumonics and easy ways to remember things. Finally ATPLQ proved to be the best for accurate and current questions for the exams I was sitting and effectively allowed me to learn the questions and answers. This is where the questions bank can make the difference between a 75% pass and a 90%+ pass.

Using this system, I passed all 14 exams first time with an average of 95%.

That relationship is established by the ATO.
It's your school that should be providing you with guidance on how, when, and what to study.

Regarding advice that you may receive, always check if someone is giving advice regarding the old syllabus or the new syllabus. As the strategies/question banks/content used do not always correlate 1:1

Be wary of Avex explanations, they are sometimes wildly inaccurate. Ask your instructors.

Be even warier of the comments which can be plain wrong! Though there are often nuggets in there too.

Your ATO and instructors should give advice on how to study. The way I did it was study - bank - study - bank. There isn't perfect alignment between sections of BGS and the banks, but it is good enough.
