How many hours did *you* have before starting the ATPL theory?

Just curious to know how many hours TT people have when strating on the ATPL theory, part time.

Tee 6th Aug 2002 09:31

180 hours

More Radio Nav/Instrument time/knowledge would have been useful

johnnypick 6th Aug 2002 10:26

FAA CPL/IR and 255 hours, and was glad I had the IR experience, it made a huge chunk of air law much easier.

monkeyboy 6th Aug 2002 12:05

100 hrs TT with Night and was part way through IMC

MorningGlory 6th Aug 2002 12:13

Started full time atpl after gaining 150TT imc, night & multi.

timzsta 6th Aug 2002 12:25

Started my ATPL theoretical distance learning 2 months ago. All I have is a JAA PPL(A) 70 hours TT, and a JAA Class 1 medical.

Mintflavour 6th Aug 2002 14:32

About to start ATPL very soon

currently hace PPL, Night, IMC ratings, 136TT, 71P1 and Class 1 Medical

moo 6th Aug 2002 15:07

do you think it would be unwise for me to begin the ATPL distance learning having only just completed a PPL??

Field In Sight 6th Aug 2002 16:10

moo,

I wished I had started the groundschool after the PPL.

Now I am restricting the amount of flying I do so that I don't go too over budget.

You may decide to give it up after receiving the stack of study folders and you will only have wasted a couple of thousand pounds :D

Good luck

Belgian Chap 6th Aug 2002 16:34

0 hrs
started off with the atpl writtens, then learned to fly
5hrs to go till my CPL/IR exam

Well as for me, I had around 60 hours TT at the start (and end) of the ATPL theory. I did feel like I was the only one below 100 hours but then I like being different.

Moo...

If you've got a good head for numbers and general aircraft knowledge then I really don't think total hours matters much. As long as you can remember that an aircraft with x number of seats and y number of passengers should have z number of fire extinguishers ..... you get the idea.

Incidentally, I passed all first time with Bristol Groundschool so the hour problem couldn't have been that bad!

Hope this helps!

Thanks for replies

I take it then most people get the flying experience necessary for start of the CPL module before starting the ATPL theories.........is this by design or more by coincidence?

please 7th Aug 2002 09:15

1.5 hours:)

Flying Clog 7th Aug 2002 10:38

1950 hours.

jasonjdr 7th Aug 2002 13:38

Zero to 'hero' (so to speak ;) )

Just knew I would like it ! Now I have it the hard thing is trying to find the first RHS position!

Gin Slinger 7th Aug 2002 20:12

150 hrs - financially it might of been better with less.

Mach the Knife 8th Aug 2002 06:33

2800, single and twin jet with pointy noses.

skeet surfer 8th Aug 2002 08:51

80 hours TT with just PPL

Hours don't matter at all, unless you have some instrument hours which will make a few of the subjects easier to grasp....

Oh, I got 13/14 first time.... proof of pudding etc etc....

Tinstaafl 8th Aug 2002 09:34

About 6 or 800 + CPL, IR & instructor rating.

The system was/is a bit different in Oz.

FormationFlyer 8th Aug 2002 11:48

Um...about 75-85TT PPL I think....I was working on the IMC rating so I could start the techs by 100hrs TT..
