ATPL/CPL Theory Correspondence courses...

Hi there,
Just wanted to ask opinions and ideas from some of the more experienced/knowledgeable guys out there. I am 26 years old, hold an expired South African PPL(due to being unable to afford flying in this country) and have got to a point where I feel I need to take some action towards achieving my dream.
The possibility of my parents providing assistance went out the window with the death of my dad, and I am not in a position to fork out tens of thousands of pounds on integrated courses due to a mortgage on a house I cannot sell due to family obligations, and accrued debt.
The option I am currently looking at is the possibility of obtaining my JAR PPL, and ATPL Theory via correspondence, while figuring out a way to do the necessary hours when I can. Obviously I will be working throughout.
Can anyone advise me on:
1) The viability of this method of training.
2) Length of time it might take to study and pass all the exams?
3)Best schools for doing it through?UK or abroad.
4) Ways of going about acquiring hours?
Any suggestions, advice, etc greatly appreciated.
Regards
WB
