Question Serious plea for Help

My wife and I have met a young man in Jamaica who is desparate to become a commercial pilot. He is currently working on the ground at Montego Bay Airport. So far he has saved up enough money to pay for his own Private Pilot licence which he did in the USA. He has now run out of money and is looking for sponsorship or some other way to achieve his dream. Does anybody have any useful suggestions please?

I shall answer this one for fear of one of the thousands of others who find themselves in exactly the same position in many countries including the US and UK being rather too blunt with you.

You see, the way it works is that to get a job as a commercial pilot one has to raise funds either from ones own family, from the bank offering ones house, parents house or granny as security. Another option is to get a sponsorship with a commercial airline where the applicant will need to display outstanding ability, wit and personality and the willingness to jump through flaming hoops. The other is to join the military.

A private pilot licence is only the very first step of a very long ladder and a very expensive one at that. Fifty thousand pounds is a very conservative ammount to expect to spend. Then there is no guarantee of a job at the end.

Sorry to be so negative, but your man in Jamaica has little chance of achieving his dream unless he works his way there and earns and saves and earns and saves........Unless you just give him the money! then there's no guarantee that he will get the job at the end!

LJ.543,

I think Sensible has summed up the situation pretty accurately.

If one is to self-sponsor, expect huge sacrifices, big long term debt, stressfull times and of course, hard work.

He may get sponsorship but if it's anything like the UK then he shouldn't pin all his hopes on it.
I don't know what the banks over there are like with regard to lending money so I can't offer any advice on that angle I'm afraid.

Does his family have any assets that could be held as security on a loan?

At the end of the day he is in the same boat as most wannabes so I wouldn't expect to get too much carpet advice from here.

Unless he has the facility to borrow money, it is pretty much a case of - work, work and save. Work, work and save.

It ain't easy - if it was, everyone would be trying to do it wouldn't they?

All the best to your pal,

VFE.

Have a look at the following site:

http://www.britishairwaysjobs.com/cc...spts/index.jsp

That will give you everything he'll need to know about trying to get into BA, so ENCOURAGE him to apply.

E-mail me if you need ANY more help, I'd be happy to assist!
