The Cost of it all

OK....where does all the money go? What are the stages in ending up with a CPL or an fATPL and why does it cost loads...by that I mean what is the cost of doing the theory, what is the cost of doing the flying, what else is there to do to get your blue licence?

It may sounds a simple question but I'm a simple lad so need an obvious answer.

Cheers

Well this question could have millions of different answers, but here goes.

-Class One Medical £400.00 (a must have before you start)
-150 hours including PPL £15,000 approx.
- ATPL Ground School Full Time £2 - 3000
- CAA Theory Exam Fee £718
- CPL Flying Module £4500 approx.
- Flight Test Fees for CPL £150

Now you have your cpl which you can add the following.

-Instructor Rating £4000 approx.
-Instrument Rating £9000 - 13000

This figures are just a very rough guide as better deals can be found depending on which schools or countries you fly in.

Training Costs

If you have the chance, get along to the Prof Flight Training Show at the Renaissance Hotel, Heathrow, this Saturday.
Most of the leading FTOs' will be there, and you get the chance to question them in detail, find out what each offers, and get a good idea of their options and costs.
You may come away more confused - but you will have learnt a lot.
For more details see the current thread on this forum.

Costs!!!

Just to throw in some more costs:

1. Exam re-sits

2. Flight test re-takes

If these are required

3. Air Fare if hour building abroad

4. Food

5. Accomadation

These usually are substantial amounts in there own right, sort of take them for granted at times

Also most of the groundschools are £4000 or more full-time. Distance learning comes in less than £2000 but this is a hard way to study. Instructor rating is likely to be around £5,500 at a school with a good reputation.

... and don't forget you will need other equipment

CRP-5 £75
Headset £150
Nav equipment rulers maps, jep charts, etc
Uniform (at some FTOs)
If you get a partial pass, you will need about 300 quid for the retest
Licence issue fee £176 until recently. Now a bit more.
And if you don't complete the training in the minimum hours, it's gonna cost you as well. Training in a twin about £300 per hour. In a complex single £200 per hour.

Be under no illusion, this is an expensive business!
