Does anybody know if you can fly in the UK as a private pilot on an FAA PPL. Ive heard rumours that it allows Day VFR only - anybody know ?

Yes you can. But only Day VFR; hence it's best to 'convert' to a JAR-FCL PPL as soon as you can if you wish to do anything else. See www.srg.caa.co.uk/pld/fcl/fcl_faq_detail.asp?ID=411 for full details of what you can do with an ICAO non-JAR licence in the UK. Also, see www.srg.caa.co.uk/documents/srg_fcl_PolicyUpdate.pdf to see how to convert an FAA PPL(A) to a JAR-FCL PPL(A) in the UK. Basically you'll need 100 hrs total time on aeroplanes, to pass the JAR-PPL Air Law and HPL exams, pass the FRTOL theoretical and practical tests and the JAR-FCL PPL Skill Test. If your FAA PPL is approaching its revalidation point, you'll need to revalidate it under FAA rules for it to be valid in the UK; it'll also need to be valid for the JAR-FCL PPL to be issued when you've met all the 'conversion' requirements.
