ATPLs. Going it alone...

Just a thought.

Whilst thumbing through the Transair catalogue t'other day I noticed the Jepessen ATPL manuals, all 14 of them for £600. Now maybe I am a bit naive but what is to stop me just purchasing them there manuals, studying and then taking the exams (dates arranged by your's truely)?

The CAA will stop you -- they require that you attend an approved course of study, whether integrated or modular, residential or distance learning. You can read all the JAR-FCL rules on the JAA.nl and CAA.co.uk websites.

According to JAR-FCL 1.160(a), an applicant for a CPL shall have received theoretical knowledge instruction on an approved course, at an approved FTO, or organisation specialising in theoretical knowledge instruction.

As far as I can see, there are two types of people who would be interested in buying these notes from Transair.

Some people are exempt from having to follow an approved course. I can't remember the details, but I think it's basically people who already hold another ICAO ATPL... whatever it is, I know it doesn't apply to me!

The other type of person is the person who enrolled in a school without checking them out properly, and only discovered after starting their studies that the school's notes are below the standard they'd like.

Can't you get them if you are converting from say FAA with lots of experience and just want to do the JAA writtens?

I was sure that you could do them yourself? After all surely it would only just give more money to the CAA if people failed and had to do them again. Unusual that the CAA would turn down the chance to rip people off again.

If we didn't have to sign up to a CAA-approved course, not only could people study themselves at home (bad idea I think) but we could go to classes anyplace in the JAA world (someplace with cheap living costs!). But yeah, if you're converting a full, non-JAA, ATPL, then that's a special case and you can get a reduction in the requirements...

JAR-FCL 1.016 covers it:

Applicants must undertake ATPL(A) theoretical knowledge instruction as determined by the Head of Training of an approved training provider, and pass ALL of the JAR-FCL theoretical knowledge examinations at ATPL(A) level;

NOTE 1: ATPL(A) holders who have a minimum of 1500 hours flying experience as PIC or Co-pilot on multipilot aeroplanes (or single-pilot aeroplanes operated by 2-pilots according to operational requirements) and hold a valid multi-pilot type rating for the aeroplane to be used for the ATPL(A) skill test and have at least 500 hours experience as pilot on that type, will be exempted from the requirements to complete an approved TRTO course or undergo approved training prior to undertaking the theoretical knowledge examinations and the skill test. Pilots with less than 500 hours experience as pilot on the type to be used for the ATPL(A) skill test will be exempted from the requirements to undergo approved training prior to undertaking the theoretical knowledge examinations but will still be required to complete an approved type rating course.
